Container Ship COSCO PACIFIC 062 W Cargo Causes Fire and Delays

Suspected undeclared lithium batteries are preliminarily believed to be the cause of the reported fire in the cargo hold of container ship COSCO PACIFIC while en route from Port Klang, Malaysia to Ngava Sheva, western India last week.

The COSCO PACIFIC, with a capacity of 10062TEU, is shared by multiple shipping lines and will cause great disturbances as we approach the Spring Festival which sees Chinese factories grind to a halt for the yearly public holiday.  Shipping lines sharing slots on this vessel include: ANL, APL, CMA CGM, CNC, COSCO SHIPPING, GOLD STAR LINE, MAERSK, MCC, OOCL, PIL, SAFMARINE, SEAGO, SEALAND, WAN HAI, ZIM.

The vessel interrupted its scheduled voyage to stop at Columbo on the morning of 06.Jan to offload the 2 containers which caught fire and the vessel is to be under constant monitoring until inspections are complete.  As of the morning of 07.Jan, the vessel is still berthed at Colombo.

The voyage covers several main loading ports in China: Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou and Nansha – you can check the other ports in the image below:

Both alkaline and acidic batteries are categorised as class 8 corrosives in the IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) and if declared, would normally be stowed correctly in the hold following strict guidelines if a vessel has the authorisation to carry Class 8 goods.  It is not clear whether the vessel had the authorisation for this, but that is not relevant at this point in time since no DG goods were declared by any parties shipping cargo on this vessel.

As a result of this, not only will cargo destined for consignees before the Spring Festival begins be seriously disrupted, but there will also be a tightening of checks and inspections at port of loadings to prevent such events happening again, especially during such a delicate time.

Southeast Asia Services promotion

Southeast Asia is a large region of Asia that stretches from east of India and south of China. This region includes continental countries as well as island nations within several different seas.

Since China is just near by Southeast Asia and with so many ports and factories in Southeast Asia, the connection between China and Southeast Asia continues to strengthen. Affected by the US-China trade war recently, more and more cargo from China is being trans-loaded in Southeast Asia. It has created more connections and businesses between China and Southeast Asia.

The Southeast Asia region is an area of great potential and it will always be a main area of business for GH Forwarding to focus on.

Our company GH Forwarding was established since 1992, and we have 27 years experience in this industry. Apart from this, we are direct booking agent in Ningbo with many shipping lines below:

For these reasons, then we can handle your shipments well and efficiently. If you need help with your shipment to/from China, GH Forwarding would be a good choice for you and we are ready for you!

Typhoon appears, careful shipment

Every summer, there are typhoons that scare the shipping industry. The tempestuous typhoon brings great loss of life and property to the coastal areas. It also brings great troubles to cargo owners, shipping lines and freight forwarders.

What impact will the typhoon have on shipments? When the typhoon makes landfall, the relevant ports stop working and the voyage schedule will delay, cargo is likely to be directly immersed in the water, damp or damaged and so on. Here are photos and descriptions to show the typhoon's troubles for the shipping industry:

Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 7 "Weipa",Chiwan, Shekou and Yantian container terminals released yellow warning. All the container operations at the gate were stopped, and the Dachan Bay terminal also stopped the empty container service, and the Shenzhen port was closed for one day. These led to the centralized return containers to the port and extract containers from the port, which made a heavy traffic on each road into the port on 1st August when ports opened the gate. It's normal to be stuck for seven or eight hours on the road!

Typhoon "Weipa" caused blockage of Shenzhen's inbound road container fleet

Typhoon "Lekima", the No.9 typhoon, began to affect Shanghai and Zhejiang provinces, on Thursday evening, August 10, and continued through the weekend. Shanghai and Ningbo shipments were unexpectedly affected. The shipping lines issued a notice on the 7th August, stopped releasing S/O on the 8th, and did not accept all the container-type requirements for changing the pick-up point from the dock. At that time, the container could not be picked up or returned. In order to avoid the impact on the picking up of the containers. During the typhoon, the relevant staff were actively informed to pick up the containers at Yangshan wharf on 8th ASAP.

In order to minimize the damage caused by typhoons to the shipping industry, shipping lines, freight forwarders and cargo owners need to take certain defensive measures:

1. Before the typhoon strikes, the shipping lines will take effective measures to protect the port and navigation in advance, stop the dock operation, delay the shipping date appropriately, which will result in demurrage fee and container detention fee and so on, at the meantime will lead to the congestion of the port access road before and after the typhoon. The extra cost caused by the container cannot enter the dock or board the ship due to typhoon doesn't need to be borne by the customer.

Water operations and passing ships in the relevant waters shall return to the port to take shelter from the wind, reinforce port facilities, and prevent grounding and collision of ships by anchoring.

2. The freight forwarder will also timely send a notice to the consignor/consignee, so that they can cooperate with the relevant operations before the terminal stops working, to avoid the customer's concern about the transportation of the goods or the work schedule affecting the effective time. Reduce customer concerns about the goods and avoid work schedules that affect effective time.

3. As for the consignor and consignee, they should be as patient as possible, reasonably arrange shipment, purchase All Risk insurance for their cargo accordingly, pay close attention to their cargo dynamics, keep close contact with the freight forwarder, and try their best to cooperate with the instructions and arrangements of the freight forwarder and the shipping line.

This summer is coming to an end, I hope that this year's typhoon is also. No matter how choppy the typhoon is, G.H Forwarding has more than 27 years of freight forwarding experience, can keep calm in face of danger, do its best to handle shipments properly for customers, and provide customers with the confidence and trust. There is such a saying " Special reporter for Typhoon Day ", then " Special freight forwarder for Typhoon Day ", you can choose G.H Forwarding.

A Letter of Thanks

After an extended stay in Phnom Penh following the GLA Conference, the remaining members of the G.H Forwarding team returned to China yesterday.

For G.H Forwarding we feel it was a successful conference in Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia, being able to meet many agents big and small from around the world.

The conference was very well organised and the support staff was always on hand to lend a helping hand for any issues.

As with the previous conference in Shenzhen last year, you could see the meticulous planning involved in getting everyone together and also the closeness of the founder, Ms. Grace Sun, who again added a personal touch by taking the time to go around and speaking to everyone throughout the conference.

The banquette was a chance to add some culture into the conference with some Cambodian dancers giving a performance for everyone to savour and remember and throughout, there were presentations and prizes – and for once, I was a lucky winner! 🙂

It was also an honour to go around all the tables with Grace, Mr. Wang Derong (the former Vice President of the China Transport Association) and also GLA VIP members from ACE Global (Australia and New Zealand offices).

All in all, I feel it was a great conference at a great location and I feel that a lot of people at the conference will be winding down back in their respective countries and working on developing the new ties made.

So to finish….

Thank you GLA for the arrangement – without which, it would not be so successful.

Thank you to all the agents who participated, without you there would be no Conference.

Looking forward to seeing you all again next time!

Father’s Day

The Origin of Father’s Day

The world’s first Father’s Day, born in 1910 in the United States, was advocated by Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, who lived in Spokane, Washington. Her mother died of childbirth when she gave birth to her sixth child. Mrs. Dodd’s father, Mr. William Smart, had fought in the Civil War. After his wife died, he was alone in a rural farm in eastern Washington State, taking on the responsibility of raising and educating six children. Mrs. Dodd was the second child in the family and the only girl in the family. The careful nature of the woman made her feel more about her father’s hard work. Mr. Smart worked hard during the day and took care of the housework and the life of every child when he came home at night. After decades of hard work, the children finally grew up. When the children hoped to make Mr. Smart enjoy his old age, Mr. Smart died in 1909 because of years of overwork.

When Mr. Smart died in 1909, Mrs. Dodd missed her father very much after attending the Mother’s Day Thanksgiving service in the church. Mrs. Dodd knew that her father’s love and hardship in raising children was no less than that of any mother. Mrs. Dodd told the church’s Rev. Rasmus how she felt and hoped for a special day in memory of the great father of the whole world. This idea was approved by the priest and supported by various church organizations. Mrs. Dodd wrote to the mayor and the state government to express her ideas, and suggested that her father’s birthday, 5 June every year, be Father’s Day. The mayor of Spokane and the governor of Washington publicly expressed their approval. The state government adopted it. This proposal was accompanied by the change of the holiday period to the third Sunday of June. On June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, where Mrs. Dodd lived, the world’s first Father’s Day celebration was held. At about the same time, people in other towns across the United States began to celebrate Father’s Day.

The Celebration of Father’s Day

On Father’s Day, people choose specific flowers to express their respects and longing for their fathers. They adopt Mrs. Dodd’s suggestion that red roses be worn to show their love for their living fathers, while white roses are worn to express their mourning for their dead fathers. In some places, dandelion is used as a symbol of Father’s Day, in others, lilac with a green leaf is used to pay tribute to father.

Today, We always use kinds of ways to express our gratitude to our fathers, such as sending a gift, making a meal for father and so on.

How are you going to celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday?
