2019 and Ningbo-Zhoushan port continues to grow

Located on the coast of the East China Sea and across from Shanghai, over the past few years, the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan has increasingly become an important amongst the many ports in China. In 2015, it handled 888.96 million tons of cargoes making it the busiest port in the world that year in terms of cargo tonnage.

Last year Ningbo-Zhoushan reported a container throughput of 26 million teu which pushed it up to rank in the world’s top three container ports for the very first time, second being Singapore and first being Shanghai. In the same year it also became the first port in the world to exceed 1 billion tonnes of annual cargo.

Now, according to the latest data from the official China Transportation Department, from Jan to April, cargo throughput has reached 348.06 million tonsat Ningbo-Zhoushan which compared with the figure last year, represents an increase of 1.2%.

At the same time, container throughput arrived 8.94 million TEU, and increased 3.3%, compared with the figure from last year.

In the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan, overall shipping routes are stable. There are 246 shipping routes which include 113 Ocean Trunk until the end of April. Sea-rail intermodal transportation business is the key point in increasing the volume of containers.

From Jan to April, sea-rail intermodal transportation shipped 243000 TEU, which compared with the figure last year, it increased 49.5%. There are 4 new routes, and total number of routes is now 14. The level of Zhoushan port service has made significant progress. Wherever the imported and exported containers are in the factory, freight forwarding, yard, dock, shipping company or other logistics areas, all this information regarding the imported and exported containers are dynamically visualized and controlled. There is also the building terminal constructed to handle new processes, the project of the increasing terminal capacity develops to 499 meters and 120000 tons in Beilun Port. Besides, the shifting of bridge cranes in the Chuanshan Port and the loading & unloading of new equipment in the Meishan Port both areunder way.

This can all be seen as early evidence of success as in the second session of the 13th People’s Congress of Zhejiang Province in Jan this year, it was reported that Zhejiang province would make the integration of its Ningbo and Zhoushan cities a priority in 2019.

In Zhoushan Port, the growth trend of huangsha, liquefied oil products, automobile ro-ro and other business increases healthily. Meanwhile, the automotive ro-ro business arrives the throughput with 88000 vehicles in the pass four months, which compared with the figure last year, it increased 206.84%. In addition, crude oil, coal and other businesses are relatively stable, but the throughput of iron ore is decreased and slightly affected by objective factors, such as the Tailings dam break in Brazil , hurricane in Australia and so on.
