Where will China make up its lost trade following the trade war with the US.

Against the backdrop of Trump’s trade war, there has been a momentum for the EU and Asia to speed up the opening of their markets to forge closer economic ties; leading to unprecedented economic growth compared to the last decade. Indeed, in 2017, exports from Europe to Asia were larger than that of the US and are growing twice as fast than the year before.[1]This trade war between the US and China allows us to see that the EU is becoming a much more important market for Asia and most notably China, creating a sense of urgency for nearly every country to establish new free trade agreements in order to integrate and participate in this new wealth of opportunity. Unsurprisingly, we have seen the Leaders of the European Union take part in two Asian summits in a row: with China on July 16 and with Japan on July 17, where we saw a signing of a free trade agreement between the EU and Japan and China reaching an agreement on WTO reform.

China

China is Russia’s largest trading partner, and it comes as no surprise that the two superpowers plan to boost trade to $200 billion by 2020. Not only that, but there has already been a 30% increase in trade in the first quarter of 2018. The lost trade between the US and China, from commodities, raw materials and goods such as clothing, soy beans and more that used to be imported and exported in and from China, due to the high tariffs imposed, will now be directed to Russia, the Eurasian Union and closer trading partners. Indeed, China is working with Moscow to build a high-speed rail link between the two, which should be operational by 2019. China and Russia are also exploring the development of the North Sea Passage, an Arctic route that, once built, will considerably reduce maritime transit times between China and Europe and Russia. All of these initiatives are an attempt by China to improve trade with countries around it and therefore rely less so on the US for its exports. Furthermore, the breakdown of barriers, lowering tariffs and promoting globalisation will allow for a more efficient world trade cycle. With higher competition due to lower prices coming into the market for goods and services, businesses will have to become more efficient and save costs, allowing for cheaper prices for more people, increasing living standards.

China

As Europe and China forge closer economic ties, we will see a profound development in businesses and trade between the two, most notably to ‘make-up’ the impact for the lost trade the upcoming US tariffs will have. The recent summit between EU leaders and China, the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang stressed the need to ‘uphold free trade and multilateralism’ due to the fact that the US and China are embroiled in a trade dispute. Not only does this create an opportunity for future trade developments, but also an exponential growth in logistics to handle this increase. For instance, the Qingdao port has been rebuilt and now features a fully automated system which is now the 7thbusiest port in the world and works with over 450 ports in 130 different countries. Moreover, China has been building mass infrastructure projects to open up trade such as the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge and the Silk Road Economic initiative are all ways China has seen to increase trade between the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU.

Overall, the trade relationship between China, Asia, the EU and Russia will develop exponentially over the coming years. China and its partners are currently negotiating a free-trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (Central Asian trade bloc. which includes Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus which borders with the EU). When the deal is finalized, this will bring Chinese goods, duty free to markets across Russia and to the borders of the EU itself, making up for the loss of trade with the US.

Is Shanghai The Next Job Opportunity?!

Let's Find Out From Our Shanghai’s Branch Manager, Kuroky

Most people I have met only go to Shanghai to be a tourist, take photogenic pictures at the bund, shop at Nanjing Road and go on a few nights out.

However, on 10th March at Ningbo on one of the busiest days for G.H Forwarding’s as it was their 2018 Annual Dinner organised by Cindy.

Somehow, after all the rehearsal practises by the different branches, I managed to speak to Kuroky, Shanghai’s branch manager about his“故事 (story)。”

Kuroky aged 31, began his career in a city that is very special to him as it is where he was born and grew up with up with his family and friends by his side from playing basketball matches to graduating at Shanghai University to achieving G.H Forwarding long-term target such as; achieving 13000TEU’s in 2017.

He quoted that Shanghai is “definitely the next opportunity” because it’s a city surrounded by foreigners who not only learn the language but, adapt to the Chinese culture in a modern city.

Additionally, due to Shanghai’s economic development making a huge impact to the world and networking with other partners to be able to achieve dreams and ambitions together plus improve his English.

He wasn’t sure which career path to specialise in however, his friends also known as colleagues in G.H Forwarding had taken care of him and taught him everything he needed to do anything he wanted in life.

Surprisingly, this inspired him to dedicate himself take on the roles and responsibilities of being a Branch Manager involving taking care of his team and meeting clients.

Kuroky does believe Shanghai can be the next destination for an opportunity to the undergraduates and postgraduates mainly due to businesses in South-East Asia, Northern Europe and many more who are relying more on Chinese companies.

From speaking to him the statement that stood out the most about his journey was why he stood by G.H Forwarding as they were was different mainly because they have built an loyal, caring-loving family working environment. By maintaining this factor our G.H Forwarding team hope to increase the number colleagues and clients across the globe.

Interview with Qingdao’s Branch Manager, Lisa Zhang

Ever wondered what Lisa Zhang’s path to becoming a Branch Manager is?

On 1st August 2016, Lisa Zhang became Qingdao’s first Branch Manager of G.H Forwarding, a well-established Class 1 forwarding booking agent for shipping lines throughout Asia and Europe.

She began her journey in international logistics and supply chain 10 years ago, when she graduated from Ocean University of China, Qingdao and gained experienced in the field for many years before joining the company.

In her exact words, she chose to work for G.H Forwarding 3 years ago “as I liked their corporate culture, atmosphere and development of planning.”

By working alongside her boss, she had learnt how G.H Forwarding operated on daily basis allowing her to run the business from Qingdao smoothly. She had built a close relationship with her boss, other branch managers and colleagues who had supported her to achieve her ambitions over the years.

Her greatest achievement has been to take part in the establishment of the Qingdao Branch and be involved in the growth of the enterprise leading to Qingdao branch team to be better, bigger and stronger.

The CEO of G.H Forwarding, Zhou Lingfeng had taught her many things in particular taking responsibility of a large-scale organisation, maintaining gratitude and by receiving constant feedback on her management skills aiding the Qingdao team to continue growing.

A big challenge for us now is to expand plus develop the enterprise domestically and globally steadily but, rapidly; alongside keeping up with the logistics and supply chain market. We would like to focus on building upon our effective communication and efficient service to expand further through our social network and increase our global partners across Asia, Middle Eastern and Europe.
